Dermal Fillers

Slow Down the Aging Process with Dermal Fillers

Unfortunately, for all of us the aging process is unavoidable, but luckily there are medical advances that help us all maintain and even restore a youthful and rejuvenated appearance.  Dermal fillers help to restore loss volume to your cheeks, chin, lips and other areas of your face that lose definition as a natural part of aging.

Dermal fillers are usually made of natural or synthetic collagens or hyaluronic acid. Ideal treatment areas vary somewhat with different dermal fillers but generally they target fine lines, facial wrinkles, and folds. Commonly treated areas include forehead lines, nasolabial folds (smile lines), thinning lips, wrinkles around the mouth (smoker’s lines), marionette lines, or hollow cheeks.

What Do Dermal Fillers Treat?

Dermal fillers are used to fix a variety of concerns related to facial aging, including:

  • Adding volume and smoothing out the deep creases that run from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds or laugh lines).

  • Plumping thin lips and smoothing out vertical lines around the edges of the lips.

  • Augmenting cheeks to enhance their shape, often restoring youthful fullness.

  • Filling out depressions (hollows) under the eye area.

  • Making indented scars from acne or chicken pox more even with surrounding skin.

  • Increasing volume to fill out gauntness in the lower cheek or temple area, which most often occurs due to fat pads shifting beneath the surface of skin.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work

Dermal fillers are a naturally-derived or synthetic material that is directly injected into skin to plump or volumized the area so that the wrinkle, depression, or fold is corrected or gone. Depending on the type of filler and the recipients metabolism and/or lifestyle, the effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years with newer fillers indicated to last as long as 5 years.

Many of the most popular dermal fillers feature natural ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to replenish the skins HA supply and restore a refreshed and youthful look. HA is a natural substance found throughout your body, and it provides the skin elasticity, volume and hydration. As you age and your body produces less HA, you may notice wrinkles, folds and a tired appearance. When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to the normal aging process. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple and stimulates the natural production of collagen where injected.  Fillers like Juvederm, Vollure, Voluma, Restylane Lyft, Silk, Refyne and Defyne are all HA fillers.

Dermal Fillers vs Botox

Although both Botox and Dermal Fillers involve injections, they treat signs of aging differently. Botox is most often injected around the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) to relax and diminish muscle movement that results in wrinkles and has nothing to do with the plumping and smoothing effects of dermal fillers. Many people elect to get both Botox and dermal fillers  together as part of a total facial rejuvenation plan because of how they work in complementary ways. When used together the combination can produce a remarkably younger-looking face.  See our total facial plan here - My Face -Beautiful to Me®.
